METrainingLog (METL) : A J2ME/Online Athletes Training Log

WIT KRG are in early development stages of new Enterprise Ireland Innovation Voucher project with Irish company TocaSport Ltd.

The primary aim of this project is to investigate the development of a set of integrated web and mobile based tools to allow athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike to easily and quickly track their training, monitor their progress, and build a history of their training. It should allow all levels of athletes and users to get the most from their training and

Users will upload training performance sessions (Times, Dates, Locations, Reps, Recoverys etc) direct from their mobile device to a central web server. They may then either review their performance data online or via mobile at any location, even during training and racing.

As a secondary requirement the project will also investigate the feasibility of the integration of the following add-on services:

  • Server Side dynamic graphs for performance analysis.
  • Potential for uploading data from Bluetooth or Infrared external devices such as Polar and Garmin Heart Rate Monitors, PowerTap, SRM and Ergomo Power systems.

Internation Association on Computer Science in Sport

The WIT KRG is a member of IACSS. They produce a useful and interesting monthly newsletter which in future we will attach to the links widget on this website. This post will give you a flavour of the topics addressed

The International Association on Computer Science in Sport (IACSS), and the predessesor (the WorkingGroup COSISP), were founded to improve the international cooperation in the field of Computer Science in Sport. Obviously, the internationalization of this discipline is of great importance for the exchange of views, the discussion and presentation of current research results as well as the realization of joint research projects. This has also been become apparent by six successful International Symposiums “Computer Science in Sport ” in Cologne (1997), Vienna (1999), Cardiff (2001), Barcelona (2003), Hvar (2005) and Calgary (2007).

X-Factor: WIT 3D Golf Swing Analysis

As part of Industry-Led (SEEPP 2006)  research project to analyse and measure golf swing kinematic data for PGA professional Mr. Peter Lawrie. Project used 50Mhz digital video capture and SIMI Motion capture System.  Project gathered data on subjects X-Factor (ie. swing data, Shoulder and Hip Rotation ratio). Project completed during coaching sessions in La Manga, Spain in association with SportsHorizon UK.

WIT Mobile Sports Statistics Application – Flash Lite 2.1

Project investigating the process for developing mobile phone based sports notation analysis software (in conjunction with EMC-Sports Ltd and Enterprise Ireland).

Sports practitioners are continuously monitoring and measuring performance. Currently field notation analysis is primarily a manual or PC/Laptop based exercise. The portability, processing power and distributed capabilities of mobile devices can significantly improve data gathering, sharing and analysis.

Thanks to EMC-Sports Ltd. and Enterprise Ireland for cooperation in development process. We are currently looking for volunteers  to work on test trials with specific senior county GAA squads for January 2009. Anyone interested contact :
